Soldier reunited with his long-lost daughter

Man reunited with baby given up for adoption. (ABC News)
An army drill sergeant whose estranged wife put his daughter up for adoption without his knowledge or permission while he was stationed in another state, has been reunited with the little girl, following a nearly two-year battle to get her back.
"I'm just happy right now. I'm with my daughter," Sgt. Terry Achane said. "It's about time."
The Utah Supreme Court earlier this month overturned a request by the toddler's adoptive parents to stay a lower court's December order that the child be returned to Achane, her father.

Rule change: MLB bans annoying move

(AP)Like a professional wrestler hitting his opponent with brass knuckles behind the referee‘s back, the surest way to draw an angry reaction from baseball fans is to break out the old fake-to-third, throw-to-first pickoff move.
Of course, the difference is the pitcher’s intent isn’t to draw a reaction from the crowd. Often times there is real sound strategy involved, whether it's attempting to dupe a base runner into making a mistake, a hitter into showing his hand too early, or even just buying some extra time to collect his thoughts or allow a reliever to warm up.
It really has served a purpose other than to annoy. But I guess that doesn’t change the fact the play rarely worked — you can count the successful attempts every season on one hand — and often killed the flow of

London hold it's nose, Points to France

PARIS (Reuters) - A cloud of harmless gas smelling of sweat and rotten eggs leaked from a chemicals factory in northwest France and drifted across the English Channel as far as London on Tuesday.
The leak occurred on Monday morning at a Lubrizol France plant near Rouen, 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Paris, and winds blew the invisible gas cloud south over northern France on Monday night and then up into England on Tuesday.
The fire brigade in the county of Kent, southeast of London, warned residents to keep their doors and windows closed due to the gas, which may make some people feel nauseous, and police said they had reports of an acrid smell in the capital.

Obama's Stonewall mention makes history

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's inaugural address on Monday marked the first time a president used the occasion to praise progress on gay rights, an indication of shifting public attitudes on the issue.

In the speech marking the start of his second term, Obama placed the struggle for gay rights squarely in the pantheon of two other defining civil rights movements in American history: those for blacks and women.
"The most evident of truths - that all of us are created equal - is the star that guides us still," he said. "Just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall."
The 1848 Seneca Falls, New York, convention was an early women's rights conference. Selma, Alabama, was the site of a pivotal 1965 civil rights march demanding equality for black Americans. The Stonewall riots of 1969 were protests against a police raid of a New York gay bar and opened the door to gay rights activism.

Surfer's delightful penguin encounter

A globetrotting surfer seeking to catch waves in the frigid seas of Antarctica instead encountered a welcoming committee of penguins. Lots of penguins. Kepa Acero from the Basque Region of Spain eased into the water, climbed aboard his surfboard, and paddled toward a colony of penguins hanging out on an iceberg. A couple of times, he found himself in the water surrounded by jumping penguins. "For a moment," he said on the video, "they were everywhere." Take a look at Acero's incredible encounter:

Acero is undertaking a project called 5 Seas in which his quest is to surf virgin surfing spots in five different seas. Antarctica is his fourth destination aboard the Pakea Bizkaia after surfing in the Sea of Angola, the

Katharine McPhee sizzle at Red Carpet

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards …

Katharine McPhee wowed in a plunging (and slit-up-to-there) Olivier Theyskens for Theory gown that left E! veteran Ryan Seacrest at a loss for words. It wasn’t hard to see why. When he regained his composure, Seacrest told her she “definitely accomplished sexy.”

Globes joke mortifies Anne Hathaway

Co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler began the Golden Globes with a bang-bang monologue that poked fun of actors, directors, and, of course, themselves. Was it the best award show opening ever? You be the judge.

Their biggest tongue-in-cheek rip occurred when the co-hosts pointed out the lovely Anne Hathaway, who was nominated for her work in "Les Miserables." Praising her work as the destitute young woman, the hosts said they hadn't seen anybody so alone and abandoned since she was onstage with James Franco at the Oscars. Hathaway cringed and covered her face with her hands in response, obviously mortified by the joke.
Perhaps the biggest laugh came when Poehler spoke about Kathryn Bigelow, who was nominated for her director work on the "Zero Dark Thirty." Poehler said she hadn't been following the torture controversy surrounding the film, but that "when it comes to torture, I trust a lady who spent three years married to James Cameron."
There were a slew of other jokes and the vast majority hit their targets. Tina Fey called Quentin Tarantino the star of all her "sexual nightmares." Both Fey and Poehler praised Meryl Streep, who couldn't be at the ceremony because she was at home with the flu. Riffing on the fact that Streep can seemingly do no wrong, both hosts agreed that Streep was "amazing" in the flu. Really disappears into it, they said.
And lest you think the esteemed Daniel Day-Lewis escaped some light mocking, Fey and Poehler pointed out that "Lincoln" wasn't the first Steven Spielberg film to star Day-Lewis. Turns out (according to Fey and Poehler), Day-Lewis also played "E.T." To prove it, he even did the "E.T." finger.
Reaction to Fey and Poehler was across-the-board positive. On Twitter, the duo earned raves. One fan wrote, "In addition to hosting, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey must also present every award. No exceptions." And there were plenty more accolades. Ellen DeGeneres wrote, "Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hilarious. I don't know why someone didn't think of this sooner. #GoldenGlobes." Other comments: "Ricky who? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's best Golden Globes gags: Who needs Ricky Gervais?" and "Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are a comedic team for the ages. Is there a funnier combo around?" We doubt it. As The Atlantic put it, Fey and Poehler "killed it."

Denzel walks red carpet with his "daughter"

Denzel Washington (Jason Merritt/Getty Images)
Denzel Washington brought a very special date to the Golden Globes Sunday night, but she was definitely unexpected. Before beginning their interview on Sunday night's red carpet, Denzel advised E!'s Ryan Seacrest, "It's not my wife Pauletta, it's my daughter."
Washington's daughter, Olivia -- who has rarely been seen and photographed at events -- accompanied him to the ceremony. She filled in for his normal date -- his wife of 29 years, Pauletta. 22-year-old Olivia is one of Denzel and Pauletta's four children, John David, Katia, and her twin brother, Malcolm.
Denzel's introduction saved Seacrest from an awkward mistake, as mystery dates have perplexed interviewers in the past. The worst mishap was probably the moment Joan Rivers confused Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins' then-wife, Jennifer Lynton, for his mother on an awards red carpet in the past.

Marley's grandson skilled in another way

For Nico Marley, his last name brings two very different set of expectations. On one hand, he is the grandson of Bob Marley, reggae’s greatest legend. On the other he is the son of Rohan Marley, a former star linebacker at the University of Miami during one of the Hurricanes’ past glory periods.
For the youngest of the three Marleys, there is little doubt about where he gets his guidance. He is his father’s son, with even more leadership qualities.

Cypress Bay senior Nico Marley — Rivals.com“He’s really impressive. When I see him, I see myself as a better player. He plays like I played in college. He’s everywhere,” Rohan Marley told the Miami Herald. “I remember when he was a little boy in Jamaica and I was still training, playing football in the [Canadian Football League] I took him to the beach with me when he was 2. I ran full speed down the beach holding his hand. He ran with me all the way. That’s when I knew he was a tough boy.”
Cypress Bay senior Nico Marley — Rivals.com
It turns out that Nico Marley has developed into something more than a tough boy. At an undersized 5-foot-7 and 182 pounds, Marley eventually committed to play linebacker at Tulane after failing to receive a scholarship offer from Miami or any other Florida Division I school. Tulane was also seen as an ideal fit for the linebacker because of his outstanding academic track record; he is on pace to graduate from Weston (Fla.) Cypress Bay High with a 3.75 GPA.
Still, Marley is driven mostly by an insatiable desire to achieve on the field. He concluded his career at Cypress Bay as a three-year starter and the team leader in tackles during all three of his seasons with a

Carey, Minaj get snippy at press conference

New “American Idol” judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj both insist that that much-publicized feud between them is over… but their body language tells a whole other story.
Carey and Minaj joined fellow newcomer Keith Urban and lone holdover Randy Jackson at a Television Critics Association panel this morning to promote the upcoming Season 12 of “Idol” (debuting January 18). And the dueling divas both brushed off questions about any lingering bad blood between them… though they didn’t exactly deny it ever existed, either.
As Carey diplomatically put it, “this is a very passionate panel” with “a lot of strong personalities,” alluding to the alleged fight that took place between her and Minaj that ended with Minaj threatening to “shoot that b----“ (and Carey hiring extra security). But Carey insisted that the “Idol” franchise is “bigger than all that… bigger than some stupid, trumped-up thing.” And Minaj joked that she came up with a unique way to settle the feud: "I put on my sex tape."
Get a sneak peek at the new season of "American Idol" right here:

At the same time, there was a palpable tension between the two chart-toppers. They sat one seat apart, with the mild-mannered Urban between them as a buffer -- the same set-up they'll have during this season's auditions. And things got borderline awkward when Carey called the feud with Minaj “one-sided,” with Minaj quickly snapping back, “No, it wasn’t.” Later, when Carey joked that the new “Idol” panel is “putting the ‘fun’ back in ‘dysfunctional,’” Minaj (who looked bored and sullen throughout) didn’t crack a smile.

But Carey and Minaj did lavish praise on each other as well… though it took a little prompting from one TV critic, who asked the pair to say something nice about each other. Minaj generously called Carey “one of my favorite artists of all time… she shaped a whole generation of singers.” And Carey fondly recalled working with Minaj on the ironically-titled 2010 track “Up Out My Face”: “I did feel she would go very far.”
One big difference between the two: their approach to judging auditions. Carey said she had a lot of trouble saying no to bad singers at first, and that she had to hide her face while rejecting them. Minaj, on the other hand, had no problem dishing out tough love: “When people say yes to someone who doesn’t deserve it, it bothers me.” So could these two be Simon and Paula 2.0? After a lot of turnover and years of sagging ratings, “Idol” producers sure hope so.
Season 12 of “American Idol” premieres Wednesday, 1/16 at 8 PM on Fox.

Makeup brand's unusual new model

The beauty industry was taken by surprise when MAC debuted its latest spokesperson, Jelena Abbou, a Serbian-American female bodybuilder with the kind of ripped physique more likely to be found in Muscle Milk ads than high end cosmetics campaigns. For those within the female bodybuilding world, however, it made perfect sense. "A lot of us use MAC," Monet Colbert, a makeup artist and former bodybuilder, tells Yahoo Shine. "It's designed for theatrical stage performances." That means it holds up under the double white lights designed to capture every muscle striation--and if you're not prepared, every wrinkle.

Picture Reveals Clinton Back At Work

Photo Shows Clinton Back at Work (ABC News)
The State Department released a photo today showing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton back at work.
Clinton had been out for weeks thanks to a series of medical concerns. She cancelled a trip to North Africa and the Middle East and appointments for testifying to Congress about the U.S. attack in Benghazi because of a flu, concussion and blood clot.
The day after Clinton was released from the hospital last week, the State Department announced her plans to return to work today.
The photo shows the secretary meeting with State leadership. She can be seen at the head of the table in a hot pink suit, chairing her weekly meeting of the Assistant Secretaries of State at 9:15 a.m. Also pictured are the State Department's deputy secretaries and the undersecretaries.
Last week Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., began making preparations at the State Department to take Clinton's place once she steps down, as she has said she will, in coming months.

Tips to Protect Yourself From the Next Sandy

3 Tips to Protect Yourself From the Next Sandy (ABC News)
It is impossible to see the images of devastation without feeling incredible sadness for those who are suffering in the wake of the Sandy superstorm. From across America, people are reaching out to help those in need, sending money, sending repair crews, sending their prayers and wishes.
There is something else that everyone who was not affected by this storm can do right now: get prepared. Now is the time while you are seeing those images and thinking about what you would do if you were faced by this kind of tragedy.
It may seem as though this is something that couldn't happen to you but that is not true. In the past decade, every single state in America has had a Presidential Disaster Declaration. Every one. Severe storms are the most common disasters but we also face flooding, tornadoes, fires and earthquakes.
Surveys show that fewer than 10 percent of Americans have taken the basic steps to be ready for a disaster. The good news is, it is not hard to do. The bad news is that if you wait until the disaster has struck, it is too late. There are three basic steps: make a kit, make a plan and get informed. If you do these three things, you will be ready:
Tip 1: Make Sure You Have an Emergency Kit
Making a kit isn't hard to do. We purchased two kits from the Red Cross but you can easily assemble your own. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists what you need.
In short, you need to have a three-day supply of nonperishable food and water; flashlight and batteries, first-aid kit, 30-day supply of medications, copies of your medical information, cellphone and chargers and a battery-powered radio. You should also have supplies for your pets. They will need to evacuate or shelter as well. The CDC lists other optional items that you might want to consider.
Tip 2: Solidify Your Emergency Plan
Next, you want to make a plan. Go through the checklist and figure out the evacuation route from your community, and decide where you would meet and who you would call if you got separated from your family. The Red Cross created a Safe and Well website that allows people affected by a disaster to post information for their loved ones letting them know that they are OK. As part of your planning, make sure that you have smoke detectors and carbon-monoxide detectors in your home and that they have fresh batteries. Learn how to turn off your power, water and gas in case you are instructed to do so.
Tip 3: Know What Disasters to Look Out For
Lastly, get informed about the disasters most likely to hit your community and what you should do for each. It isn't hard. Most states have this information available on their public health or emergency preparedness websites. Figure out how your local authorities will share information. What are the radio stations they will use? What websites will have information? Then make sure you listen to warnings and heed the advice.
If a storm might hit your area next week, now is the time to fill your car with gas, check your batteries and plan where you would go if you are told to evacuate. And please, if you are told to evacuate, do so. Many lives are lost by people who decide to ride it out at home.
Yes, there will be times when communities are evacuated and the disaster does not materialize. Consider that a drill for the times when the evacuation was actually needed.
My advice is this: Do these things today. Now. When your mind is on the disaster we are seeing on television and in the papers. After the media coverage passes, it is too easy to forget about it. The steps you take today could save your life and the lives of your family.

Ticket advice from a retired traffic cop

Thirty-five years ago, middle school-age Mike Brucks realized he wanted to be a police officer. After graduating from high school he joined the army and became a military traffic cop on the million-acre Fort Bliss in western Texas and New Mexico. "It was a small-scale community, with slow speeds, and we would investigate accidents on- and off-post, in Colorado, New Mexico, and as far as Corpus Christi, anywhere a serviceman was injured or killed," Brucks says. After six years in the Army he joined the El Paso Police Department as a traffic cop. He retired last May after 22 years and almost 40,000 tickets, by his estimation, most of which he issued while riding Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson big-motor touring bikes. Here are some of his stories from the road and tips for motorists looking to avoid a ticket.
Besides speeding, which is the reason for most tickets, what's most likely to get a traffic cop's attention? Seatbelts, cell phones, red lights, and stop signs. I concentrate on all the things that can cause an accident. There are some cops who write tickets for expired plates, for having no insurance or

Winners and losers of fiscal cliff deal

The bill to avoid the "fiscal cliff" is finally passed and signed by President Barack Obama, and the culmination of intense negotiations between Republicans and Democrats seems to have left nearly everyone unhappy—or, at most, begrudgingly grateful that some kind of deal was reached.
Unlike elections, the legislative process doesn't always offer a clear winner and loser, and the battle over how to avoid nearly $600 billion in painful spending cuts and tax increases was no exception. But some escaped with fewer cuts and bruises than others. Here are the "winners" and "losers"—terms we use loosely.
'Winners'
President Barack Obama: The president took a beating from his own party two years ago when he cut a deal with Republicans that temporarily extended income tax rates for all income earners set by former President George W. Bush. This time, Obama refused to budge on one of his main campaign promises to increase taxes on wealthy taxpayers. As part of this deal, the income tax rate for individual earners above $400,000 and families earning above $450,000 will increase.

Biggest donations to charity in 2012

Last year's 15 biggest gifts to charitable causes by American billionaires added up to more than last year's, but of that total more than half came from one man.
Warren BuffettWealthy Americans gave $5.1 billion dollars in the 15 biggest charitable donations of 2012, according to the "Chronicle of Philanthropy." But subtract the $3 billion pledged by Warren Buffett, and the total would be far less than last year's $2.6 billion.
The top givers were:
  1. Warren Buffett: $3.09 billion in stock to be divided equally among three foundations run by his children
  2. Mark Zuckerberg: $498.8 million to Silicon Valley Community Foundation to support education and health
  3. Paul Allen: $300 million pledge to the Allen Institute for Brain Science
