Globes joke mortifies Anne Hathaway

Co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler began the Golden Globes with a bang-bang monologue that poked fun of actors, directors, and, of course, themselves. Was it the best award show opening ever? You be the judge.

Their biggest tongue-in-cheek rip occurred when the co-hosts pointed out the lovely Anne Hathaway, who was nominated for her work in "Les Miserables." Praising her work as the destitute young woman, the hosts said they hadn't seen anybody so alone and abandoned since she was onstage with James Franco at the Oscars. Hathaway cringed and covered her face with her hands in response, obviously mortified by the joke.
Perhaps the biggest laugh came when Poehler spoke about Kathryn Bigelow, who was nominated for her director work on the "Zero Dark Thirty." Poehler said she hadn't been following the torture controversy surrounding the film, but that "when it comes to torture, I trust a lady who spent three years married to James Cameron."
There were a slew of other jokes and the vast majority hit their targets. Tina Fey called Quentin Tarantino the star of all her "sexual nightmares." Both Fey and Poehler praised Meryl Streep, who couldn't be at the ceremony because she was at home with the flu. Riffing on the fact that Streep can seemingly do no wrong, both hosts agreed that Streep was "amazing" in the flu. Really disappears into it, they said.
And lest you think the esteemed Daniel Day-Lewis escaped some light mocking, Fey and Poehler pointed out that "Lincoln" wasn't the first Steven Spielberg film to star Day-Lewis. Turns out (according to Fey and Poehler), Day-Lewis also played "E.T." To prove it, he even did the "E.T." finger.
Reaction to Fey and Poehler was across-the-board positive. On Twitter, the duo earned raves. One fan wrote, "In addition to hosting, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey must also present every award. No exceptions." And there were plenty more accolades. Ellen DeGeneres wrote, "Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hilarious. I don't know why someone didn't think of this sooner. #GoldenGlobes." Other comments: "Ricky who? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's best Golden Globes gags: Who needs Ricky Gervais?" and "Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are a comedic team for the ages. Is there a funnier combo around?" We doubt it. As The Atlantic put it, Fey and Poehler "killed it."
